Dr Johann Strauss is a senior scientist in Sustainable cropping systems within the Plant Science Directorate of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. His has 18 years research experience in sustainable dryland cropping systems based on Conservation Agriculture practices. The body of the research comes from 4 large long-term trials (Langgewens and Tygerhoek Research farms) and 2 smaller on-farm trials with producers in Riversdale and Hopefield.
Following several foreign visits focusing on conservation agriculture, he was determined to initiate a CA forum for the Western Cape where producers, researchers and industry role players could come together to talk about conservation agriculture issues within the province. This was realised in 2012 and has delivered 11 annual conferences that include local and international farmers and researchers.
Since 2009 he have supervised and co-supervised 26 completed Master theses, currently supervising 3 MSc’s and 6 PhD’s.
He is living my passion for agriculture through his research and conservation agriculture work with producers in the Western Cape.
